Offers Front Porch Forum Lecture Series and Programs for Kids

COS COB, CT - On Monday, March 3, at 10:00 a.m. the spring Front Porch Forum, American Studies Lecture Series will return to Bush-Holley Historic Site. The front porch of Bush-Holley House, where artists and writers gathered to debate the issues of the turn-of-the-century, is the inspiration for our study lectures. Join us this spring to explore themes in American history and culture presented by award-winning historians as we look at the theme “Race and the Making of America: From the Civil War to 1920.”  Individual Lectures are $15 per person. The lecture series is $40 per person for all three lectures.

The first lecture in the series is The Sea Captain’s Wife: A True Story of Love, Race and War in the Nineteenth Century presented by historian Martha Hodes, PhD, professor of history at New York University. The following lectures are Race, Immigration, and Citizenship:  Whiteness in American Political Culture presented by historian Matthew Jacobsen, PhD, professor of American Studies and History at Yale University on Monday, April 7 and Darwinian Object Lessons: The Cultural Formation of the African Savage in American Culture presented by Teresa DeFlitch, Project Manager at the Center for History and New Media at George Mason University on Monday, May 12.

 

For Kids

On March 1 the Bush-Holley History & Art Camp registration opens to the public. The camp that offers children in 2nd through 7th grades an interactive two-week camp experience with a one-week concentration in colonial history and another week in art. Friday, March 21
, 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon- Children’s Vacation Workshops-Paint Me a Picture. Open to grades 2 – 6. Children will make a special visit to Bush-Holley House to view artwork, then make a masterpiece of their own using acrylic paints.  Reservations are required. Call (203) 552-5329 ext. 4.

Saturday, March 29
, from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m. - Liberty’s Kids Mini-Marathon. Children will watch four 30-minute episodes of the PBS animated children’s television series Liberty’s Kids, the history program that follows the American Revolution through the eyes of three teens. Episodes include: “The Boston Tea Party,” “Intolerable Acts,” “The Midnight Ride,” and “The Shot Heard Round the World.” Hands-on activities also included. The Mini-marathon will be held in the Vanderbilt Education Center and is free of charge, however reservations are requested.  Call (203) 869-6899 ext. 10.

 

Upcoming Exhibition

From Harbor to Haven: Connecticut Scenes and Artist Printmakers from the Collection of Reba and Dave Williams opens Tuesday, April 1 and will be on view until Sunday, August 17 in the William Hagerty Gallery. A wine and cheese opening reception will take place Tuesday, April 1 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. The exhibition includes over 60 original prints selected from the renowned collection of Greenwich residents Reba and Dave Williams and will feature 19th and 20th-century prints with a focus on Connecticut‑‑its sites and its artists­­. Co-curated and coordinated by Dave Williams, The Print Research Foundation, and Kathleen Motes Bennewitz, Curator of Exhibitions of the Historical Society of the Town of Greenwich, this original exhibition will be divided into two parts; prints of Connecticut, depicting Connecticut scenes and sites; and prints by artists who lived or actively worked in the state.  Some of the artists whose works are included in the exhibition are John Henry Twachtman, Childe Hassam, Kerr Eby, Will Barnett, John Steuart Curry, Wanda Gag, Alexander Calder, Robert Motherwell, Helen Frankenthaler, and Jasper Johns. The William's collection is the largest collection of American prints in private hands and includes more than 5,000 works, representing over 2,000 artists from the 19th century to the present.  

Bush-Holley Historic Site, 39 Strickland Road in Cos Cob, features the circa 1730 National Historic Landmark Bush-Holley House, home of Connecticut’s first art colony. Guided tours of the house feature an American Impressionist art collection and historic interiors. The William Hegarty Gallery presents historically and artistically significant exhibits that focus on the art and artists of the Cos Cob art colony, museum collections and aspects of Greenwich history. Open Tues. – Sun.; 12– 4 p.m. Admission to gallery, visitor center and house museum is $6 for adults, $4 seniors and students. Children under 6 and Historical Society members are free.
