William C. Crooks Distinguished Lecture: Abraham Lincoln As Commander-in-Chief
Greenwich Library Cole Auditorium
Tuesday, October 19
7:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m.

Lecture by James McPherson, noted historian, preservation crusader and Pulitzer Prize winning author of Battle Cry of Freedom: The Civil War Era. The lecture takes its subject from McPherson’ book, Abraham Lincoln, in which he builds the case that Lincoln’s “hands-on” style and decisions as commander-in-chief during the civil war effectively combined political policy and military strategy to ensure the nation’s survival. A perspective on presidential power as relevant today as it was during the Civil War.

Greenwich Library Cole Auditorium, 101 West Putnam Ave. Greenwich, CT

Historic Walk: Bruce Park
Sunday, October 24
2:00 pm

What do the construction of I-95, the Revolutionary War and the site of a 200-year-old mill and farm have in common? They're all part of the history of Bruce Park, Greenwich's oldest public park, established in 1908 through a bequest of Robert Moffat Bruce. Come and hear about the park at the heart of Greenwich and find out why it's more than just another pretty place to commune with the ducks, play a round of croquet or take a snooze in the shade. Tour held in conjunction with the Greenwich Tree Conservancy and led by Greenwich Tree Warden Bruce Spaman and Greenwich Historical Society Archivist Anne Young.

Free admission but donations to either organization welcome.
Reservations required and space limited. Call 203-869-6899, Ext. 18
