To Teach

Docent ~ the word docent comes from the Latin word docere, meaning to teach.

At the Historical Society of the Town of Greenwich, docents are educators trained to further the public’s understanding of the rich cultural and historical collections of Bush-Holley Historic Site.

Docents give tours of Bush-Holley House and assist with hands-on activities during our popular school programs on topics such as colonial America, Impressionism, and the American Revolution.

 Your investment of time and talent will be rewarded with an exciting new docent program, designed to introduce you to topics and new research in American history and Art History, in addition to providing you with a creative and fun social atmosphere.

This fall, a lecture series will be scheduled to include many interesting topics relating to Bush-Holley Historic Site.

Professional Development Workshops in Museum Studies including a Curator’s Tour of Bush-Holley-House, Working with School Groups, and training in Material Culture and Visual Arts Education.

 

The Details

docent03.jpgTraining Program: The training year runs from late September to June.

Time Commitment: As a docent-in-training, docents are expected to attend weekly lectures and workshops on Mondays from 10 to 11:30 a.m.
Additional time may be required to observe tours. Once you are ready to lead tours, you are expected to give a minimum of 3 tours per month. Tours last approximately 2 hours.

Information Session: You are invited to a special information session with staff and current docents on Monday, September 15, 2008 at 10 a.m. It will be held in the Vanderbilt Education Center at the Bush-Holley Historic Site. Refreshments will be provided!

The Historical Society of the Town of Greenwich is looking for volunteers to become docents, museum educators trained to further the public’s understanding of the rich cultural and historical collections of Bush-Holley Historic Site. Docents lead school programs focusing on Colonial America, the American Revolution, and Impressionism. Docents will also give tours of the exhibition, Carved with Rasps and Chisels in the William Hegarty Gallery. To learn more about becoming a docent, please attend an information session on Monday, September 15 at 10:00 a.m. in the Vanderbilt Education Center, or call Marybeth G. Nisco, Assistant Director of Education at (203) 552-5329, ext. 3 for further information.

The Historical Society is seeking energetic volunteers for the following:
    Bush-Holley House Museum and exhibition docents
    The Antiquarius Holiday House Tour hosts and greeters
    The Scarecrow Day activities facilitators
    The Candlelight Tours and Marionette Theater hosts and facilitators
