Focus on Printmaking this May at Bush-Holley Historic Site
COS COB, CT - Throughout the month of May at Bush-Holley Historic Site, the art of printmaking is featured through programs and activities. The current exhibition in the William Hegarty Gallery, From Harbor to Haven: Connecticut Scenes and Artist Printmakers from the Collection of Reba and Dave Williams, spotlights over 60 works drawn from the American print collection of Greenwich residents Reba and Dave Williams. The exhibition includes 19th and 20th century prints with a focus on Connecticut; its scenes and sites by artists who lived or worked in the state, and will remain on view until August 17, 2008.
In addition to the exhibition, on May 5, “A Day of Childe Hassam,” a lecture and lunch event produced in collaboration with Bruce Museum, will offer visitors an in depth look at Hassam’s work as a printmaker. On May 15, a gallery talk about prints and printmaking will be presented by David Tunick of David Tunick, Inc. art gallery. Other events at Bush-Holley in May are a children’s puppet show, The Fairy Circus, by Tanglewood Marionettes on May 10 and an American studies lecture on May 12. Gallery hours are Tuesday – Sunday, 12 to 4 p.m. The site is closed Mondays. Adults $6, seniors and students $4. Children under 6 and Historical Society members FREE. Tours of the historic Bush-Holley House museum are included with admission. Admission is free on Tuesdays. Saturday, May 3 – Art to the Avenue – In partnership with the Greenwich Arts Council, Bush-Holley Historic Site will be open to the public for FREE from 12- 4 p.m. Visitors are invited to visit the current exhibition, From Harbor to Haven: Connecticut Scenes and Artist Printmakers and enjoy a guided tour of Bush-Holley House. Monday, May 5 - A Day of Childe Hassam: Printmaker. Spend a morning and afternoon exploring the world of Childe Hassam. Begin at 10 a.m. at a lecture about the artist at the Bruce Museum, 1 Museum Drive, Greenwich, presented by Elizabeth Barker in conjunction with the Museum’s spring/summer exhibition, 20th Century American Prints from the Bruce Museum Collection. Then go to Bush-Holley Historic Site from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. for lunch and a guided tour of the exhibition From Harbor to Haven: Connecticut Scenes and Artist Printmakers as well and a special Hassam-focused tour of the Bush-Holley House that features works by Childe Hassam. Saturday, May 10 -Tanglewood Marionettes present The Fairy Circus. Performances at 2:00 and 4:00 p.m. in the Vanderbilt Education Center. A puppet show featuring over 20 beautifully hand-crafted marionettes, The Fairy Circus showcases turn-of-the-century style trick puppetry. Puppets dance, play instruments, juggle, contort, transform and fly through the air to music of favorite composers! Recommended for children of all ages. $12 per person. Monday, May 12 at 10:00 a.m. - Front Porch Forum, American Studies Lecture- Darwinian Object Lessons: The Cultural Formation of the African Savage in American Culture presented by Teresa DeFlitch, Project Manager at the Center for History and New Media at George Mason University. A discussion on the ways Africans were imagined in American popular culture and how this affected the development of American identity. Individual Lecture: $15 per person. Call 203 869-6899, ext 10.

Bush-Holley Historic Site, 39 Strickland Road in Cos Cob, features the circa 1730 National Historic Landmark Bush-Holley House, home of Connecticut’s first art colony. Guided tours of the house feature an American Impressionist art collection and historic interiors. The William Hegarty Gallery presents historically and artistically significant exhibits that focus on the art and artists of the Cos Cob art colony, museum collections and aspects of Greenwich history.
