Historic Site

Located on the historic Cos Cob Harbor, home of Connecticut's first art colony, the Historical Society's facilities include the National Historic Landmark Bush-Holley House (circa 1730); the Visitor Center, housed in a former village post office (circa 1805); the Hugh and Claire Vanderbilt Education Center, set in a mid-19th century barn and artists' studio; and the William E. Finch, Jr. Archives. The historic grounds and gardens have been restored to their appearance during the Cos Cob Impressionist art colony that thrived between 1890 and 1920. The Historical Society is accredited by the American Association of Museums, a designation earned by only five percent museums nationwide. Learn More

Through August 17, 2008 - From Harbor to Haven: Connecticut Scenes and Artist Printmakers from the Collection of Reba and Dave Williams; an original exhibition of over 60 works depicting the sites and scenes of Connecticut, and works by artists who lived or worked in the state. more info

Saturday, May 10 - Tanglewood Marionettes: The Fairy Circus 

2:00 and 4:00 p.m. Puppet show featuring over 20 beautifully hand-crafted marionettes. $12 per person. To register call 203 869-6899 ext. 10.

Monday, May 12 - Front Porch Forum, American Studies Lecture

Darwinian Object Lessons: The Cultural Formation of the African Savage in American Culture presented by Teresa DeFlitch, Project Manager at the Center for History and New Media at George Mason University. A discussion on how Africans were imagined in American popular culture and how this impacted the American identity. Coffee at 9:30 a.m. Lecture at 10 a.m. Cost $15. Call 203 869-6899, ext 10.
