Candis Bush was one of five female slaves belonging to the David Bush family who worked primarily in the household and served as personal servant to the mistress, Sarah Bush, and her children. Candis was bequeathed to Sarah and her children upon David Bush's death. In 1825 she was manumitted by his daughter Fanny. Upon her manumission, Candis was the last slave freed in Greenwich. Candis is buried in a section of Union Cemetery that was at the time set aside "for the internment of people of color." Click on the image to read the statement of manumission.
