Joshua Hempstead (1678-1758) lived and worked in New London. He diligently recorded his daily observations and activities from 1711 to his death in 1758, including his interaction with the slaves in his household. Diaries like Hempstead's, kept by prominent white citizens, are another way of learning about--and remembering--the everyday realities of slavery in New England.
