Learning Links have been included to provide a broader perspective of the Civil War and United States culture during the 1850s-1870s. However, not all opinions expressed in these links represent those of The Historical Society of the Town of Greenwich or its Board of Trustees.

The culture of the United States during the Civil War era was quite different than it is today. Manuscript material such as correspondence, newspapers, and visual images are full of fascinating history, but note that the language in these materials may be offensive, especially when the subjects are African-Americans, Irish immigrants, or women. Please read this language not as statements of fact but in the context of mid-19th-century politics and society.
